The Matching Grants Program of the Rotary Foundation
The Rotary Foundation provides matching funds for the international service projects of Rotary clubs and districts. Since 1965, more than 24,000 Matching Grant projects in 167 countries have been funded at a cost of more than $257 million.
Matching Grants help Rotary clubs and districts carry out humanitarian projects with clubs and districts in other countries. The Rotary Foundation provides a one-to-one match for each US$1 District Designated Fund/SHARE contribution and a $0.50 match for each $1 contribution towards the project. Applications are accepted from 1 July to 31 March.
District 5870 has strongly supported the district clubs in developing and implementing humanitarian projects using TRF matching funds.
A brief review of the matching grant program and basic criteria are:
· Rotary clubs and districts in at least two countries must be involved in the project,
· Grant awards range from $5,000 to $150,000,
· A project committee of at least three Rotarians must be established for matching grants,
· A minimum contribution of $100 US is required from the host partner in the project country,
· Rotarians from both counties must actively participate in the project.
· The Trustees have a fiduciary responsibility to the donors of The Rotary Foundation to see that funds are spent as intended;
· The project should satisfy the real needs of the receiving country.
Applications are accepted by the Rotary Foundation from 1 July to 31 March and approved from 1 August to 15 May. Requests over $25,000 are considered by the Rotary Foundation Trustees at semiannual meetings; completed applications must be received by 1 August for the October meeting and by 15 December for the April meeting.
All Rotary Foundation grants require the highest attention to stewardship. Progress reports must be submitted at least every 12 months for the life of the project. A final report is due within two months of the full expenditure of funds.
The District leadership believes that each Rotary Club wants to do local and international projects. Getting District 5870 support is helpful and can provide leveraging of the club contributions. As your members contribute to the RI Foundation, your club then has opportunity to receive some of the money back in the form of Humanitarian Matching Grants.

District 5870 requires that each application submitted must be signed by a district certified grant writer. Our experience has shown that this reduces application errors and minimizes rewriting the application for completeness and following the Foundation rules.
If you have any questions, need clarification or assistance in writing the grants application, you may contact the Grants Subcommittee Chair, Ken Adams, or the Grants Specialist, Suresh Pahwa. Their contact information is available in the district directory.
