Tim Talk
January, 2010
Rotary Awareness Month
Fellow Rotarians,
January is Rotary Awareness month and as I start to think of that term, Rotary Awareness, my mind becomes swamped with thoughts of ways to make people aware of Rotary. One of my classmates, D5890 (Houston area) DG Ed Charlesworth, raises awareness with his car wrapped in Rotary messages (see photo).

D5890 Sunny Sarma & RIPE Ray Klinginsmith proudly show off D5890's traveling message board.
We can rent billboards, place labels in donated books or on goods that we sell for fundraisers, or place signs on, or in front of, Rotary club projects. We can put a decal on our car. We can simply wear our Rotary lapel pin … every day …and be prepared to give a short, concise, answer when we are asked, “What’s Rotary?”
Another way to raise awareness is to invite a qualified prospect to attend a meeting of your club. Then sponsor him/her for membership. Mark Twain wrote, “Grief can take care of itself, but to get full value of a joy you must have somebody to divide it with.” Get more joy out of Rotary by dividing and sharing it with others. Raise awareness by sponsoring a new member.
Clubs in Temple, Killeen, Harker Heights, Austin (Cosmopolitan and Lakeline) and others are working to establish new EarlyAct FirstKnight programs. We may have 8 new programs in January; that’s raising Rotary Awareness in a big way!
Rotarians can also raise awareness of Rotary by financially supporting the various programs of the Annual Programs Fund of The Rotary Foundation. All that needs to be done is contribute to The Rotary Foundation without specifying a program to which the contribution should be applied. Support of PolioPlus, and the Gates Challenge, can be demonstrated by specifying that your contribution be used for that program to eradicate polio.
Each of us can increase our own awareness of Rotary by registering for, and attending, several upcoming events. The Foundation Dinner is January 30, at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort, and registration is available online at the district website, www.rotary5870.com. RI Vice President Eric Adamson, accompanied by his wife, Linda, will be our guest speaker. The International Friendship and Service Fair is February 12-13, in Monterrey, MX. Registration information will be available soon; check the district website for updates. Registrations are being accepted at www.tejasrotaryconference.org for our district conference, the Tejas Multi-District Conference in San Antonio, April 29 – May 2. We were recently advised that Past RI Vice President Monty Audenart, from Canada, will be our President’s Representative. The other 5 DGs and I are thrilled that Monty will be our representative, and I’m confident that all Rotarians from the six districts will enjoy meeting and spending the weekend with Monty and his wife, Liz, enjoying and becoming more aware of Rotary while in San Antonio. Vamos al San Antonio, April 29 – May 2.
By a club nominating a member to the D5870 Roll of Fame we all become more aware of the individual’s commitment to Service Above Self, and the nominee will be aware that his/her efforts are recognized and appreciated. But hurry, the deadline for Roll of Fame nominations is January 12. See the district website, www.rotary5870.com for more information and nomination forms.
As you can see, there are many ways to raise Rotary Awareness, and I’m sure you know of many more. Share them with us.

PDG Barbara Warden is serving as Chair of the District Governor Nominating Committee that will select a nominee for our 2012-2013 DG. In February, we will be asking for the names of good, qualified candidates for that position, so be thinking of who to propose. For the purpose of selecting a District Governor Nominee, the District is divided into fifteen (15) divisions. Listed above are the Nominating Committee, alternates (a), and the divisions represented. Although the official call for DG nominations will be made in February, clubs may submit their nominations to Chair PDG Barbara anytime before the March 6 deadline. Any questions, contact PDG Barbara Warden at rotarypdg@yahoo.com
Congratulations to the fifty-four (54) members of the Rotary Club of Waco who will each celebrate 30+ years of Rotary membership in January, 2010, with a cumulative 2,126 years of Rotary experience! Special recognition goes to Dr. J. Harry Jeanes (59 years), and Dr. James H. Scruggs (58 years).
As I close this letter, I just heard my wife Gail give out a big cheer from the other room; she reached her goal of over $42,000 contributed to her DG Spouse’s Project for the Wheelchair Foundation. Congratulations to her, and thanks to all of you who contributed. More information will be coming about that project.
I look forward to seeing you as we celebrate The Rotary Foundation at the Hyatt Lost Pines on January 30.
The Future of Rotary Is In Your Hands.
